Vanessa Naish

Vanessa advises clients and colleagues on complex issues relating to arbitration. She also advises on public international law, in particular state immunity and investment protection issues. Vanessa helps to lead and drive the firm's thought leadership and client and external engagement on key developments in both areas.

Vanessa’s role is heavily focussed on client engagement on arbitration and public international law issues. She is involved in devising and delivering internal and external training, client seminars and webinars and drafting ebulletins and other legal know-how materials for clients. Vanessa also supports the management of the global arbitration practice in business planning and strategy development. Vanessa's particular areas of interest include alternative fee arrangements, difficult legal issues arising out of the complex interactions of multiple laws and arbitral procedure.

Prior to joining Herbert Smith Freehills in 2012, Vanessa was a senior associate in the international arbitration practice at another global law firm. Vanessa has acted in ad hoc and institutional arbitrations across multiple jurisdictions and under a range of governing laws.

Vanessa is a member of the Law Society’s Trade in Legal Services Working Party, assisting the Law Society to develop policy positions on key issues arising from ongoing trade negotiations and implementation of trade agreements between the EU and other states. Vanessa is a contributor to Blackstone's Civil Practice and is a member of the LexisPSL Arbitration Consulting Editorial Board.
